Void Replenishment: How Voids Accrete Matter Over Cosmic History

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cosmic voids are underdense regions filling up most of the volume in universe. They expected to emerge comprising negative initial density fluctuations, and subsequently expand as matter around them collapses forms walls, filaments, clusters. We report results from analysis a cosmological simulation specially designed accurately describe low-density regions, such cosmic voids. Contrary common expectation, we find that also experience significant mass inflows over history. On average, 10% sample at z ∼ 0 is accreted overdense reaching values beyond 35% for fraction More than half entering lingers on periods time ∼10 Gyr well inside them, inner radii. This would imply part gas lying given proceeds (e.g., clusters or filaments), where it could have been preprocessed, thus challenging scenario galaxy formation voids, dissenting idea being pristine environments.

Voids and the Cosmic Web: cosmic depression & spatial complexity

Voids form a prominent aspect of the Megaparsec distribution of galaxies and matter. Not only do they represent a key constituent of the Cosmic Web, they also are one of the cleanest probes and measures of global cosmological parameters. The shape and evolution of voids are highly sensitive to the nature of dark energy, while their substructure and galaxy population provides a direct key to the...

Universal density profile for cosmic voids.

We present a simple empirical function for the average density profile of cosmic voids, identified via the watershed technique in ΛCDM N-body simulations. This function is universal across void size and redshift, accurately describing a large radial range of scales around void centers with only two free parameters. In analogy to halo density profiles, these parameters describe the scale radius ...

Zipf’s law for fractal voids and a new void-finder

Voids are a prominent feature of fractal point distributions but there is no precise definition of what is a void (except in one dimension). Here we propose a definition of voids that uses methods of discrete stochastic geometry, in particular, Delaunay and Voronoi tessellations, and we construct a new algorithm to search for voids in a point set. We find and rank-order the voids of suitable ex...

Alignment of Voids in the Cosmic Web

We investigate the shapes and mutual alignment of voids in the large scale matter distribution of a ΛCDM cosmology simulation. The voids are identified using the novel WVF void finder technique. The identified voids are quite nonspherical and slightly prolate, with axis ratios in the order of c : b : a ≈ 0.5 : 0.7 : 1. Their orientations are strongly correlated with significant alignments spann...

Geometry and scaling of cosmic voids

Context. Cosmic voids are observed in the distribution of galaxies and, to some extent, in the dark matter distribution. If these distributions have fractal geometry, it must be reflected in the geometry of voids; in particular, we expect scaling sizes of voids. However, this scaling is not well demonstrated in galaxy surveys yet. Aims. Our objective is to understand the geometry of cosmic void...
